So all this week I have been watching the mens college basketball conference tournaments. It has really reminded me of how much I absolutely love competition. I think as a species, all humans are naturally competitive but in all different forms. My fascination for sports, video games, fantasy sports, eating contests, award shows, etc. all derives from my competitive spirit. I like to see complete domination. The Houston Rockets just won their 21st game in a row which is unbelievable. The San Jose sharks just won their 11th game in a row. However, what really reaches out to me is seeing the underdog overcome adversity and climb to the top. This is why the movies Rudy and Miracle make me cry like a baby no matter how many times I watch them. I think the most beautiful part of sports is the "game-winning shot". Ahh! You don't know how many times as a child I have dreamed of nailing the 3-point shot at the buzzer to win or being on a breakaway with only seconds left with the game tied. Actually, I still have those dreams all the time. I have personally witnessed my fair share of these situations but never first-hand unfortunately. What is probably the best moment I have with my father was when we were at a Kansas City Chiefs home game against their bitter rivals, the Denver Broncos. The chiefs, Pete Stoyanovich kicker nailed a 53 yard field goal with the clock running down to zero as the kick went up. The crowd went absolutely ape shit. I have this image that will forever burned in my memory and that is of my dad lifting me in the air and spinning me around after the kick was made. I like to think about this moment whenever I get sad. It's pretty easy to cheer up when you think about 70,000 people in one place feeling this complete connection of joy. I find it to be so romantic.
later,
Nick
